Project Summary

The capital of the Republic of Karelia Petrozavodsk is located on the shores of Lake Onega, which belongs to the catchment area of the Baltic Sea. The Republic has a unique role in the conservation of biodiversity in Northern Europe. Despite its scenic surroundings Petrozavodsk was declared by the Council of the Barents / Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC), the area of ecological trouble due to contamination of Lake Onega wastewater discharges of the city. Drinking water in the city has a distinctive odor and brownish tint due to the high humus content andthe water taken from Lake Onega only partly treated by means of to filtration and chlorination.

The wastewater treatment plant treats about 145 000 m3 of industrial and domestic wastewater per day using only conventional methods of biological treatment. As a result, the concentration of phosphorus in wastewater discharged into Lake Onega significantly higher than the levels recommended by HELCOM.

The investment program provides for the following:

• construction of a chemical unit at the sewage treatment plant;
• modernization of the plant and the installation of new equipment for the chemical removal of phosphorus;
• Construction of plants for the treatment and dewatering of sewage sludge.
