New waste collection point in Koutalahti Harbour, Kajaani

21 августа 2020 г.

The new waste collection point at Koutalahti Harbour has waste bins for plastic, cardboard, glass-metal, mixed waste and mixed harbour waste. Mixed harbour waste is a new type of waste, including tarpaulins, ropes and nets. This waste is harmful in waste incineration process and therefore needs to be sorted separately.

The construction of the waste room was a joint project of Metsähallitus, the City of Kajaani and Ekokymppi. Ekokymppi created plans for the building, Metsähallitus financed for the construction and the City of Kajaani will take care of emptying the waste bins in the future.

“The construction of the waste collection point is a great example of successful local cooperation. Waste from the areas managed by Metsähallitus, such as Ärjänsaari Island, might end up in the harbour waste bins, so we want to be involved in responsible waste collection," says Anni Koskela, project manager in Metsähallitus.

The waste collection point at Koutalahti Harbour is intended for the waste of boaters using the harbour. Boaters should already sort the waste in the boat so that it can be easily dropped into the right waste bin at the harbour.

The construction of the waste collection point at Koutalahti Harbour was part of the GreenSol project. The project is based on the Karelia CBC program, which is financed by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland.
